About the event:
The U.S.-Asia Law Institute hosts Ma Ying-jeou (LLM ‘76) in conversation with USALI founder and Director Emeritus Jerry Cohen. He will talk about the complicated relationships among Taiwan, the People’s Republic of China and the United States.
About the speakers:
Ma Ying-jeou was president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from 2008-2016, winning two elections as a candidate for the Nationalist (Kuomintang) Party. As president and since, he has prioritized easing tensions between Taiwan and the People’s Republic of China. He visited China in March 2023, the first former president to do so since 1949. Before becoming president, Mr. Ma was mayor of Taipei, minister of justice, and a representative to Taiwan’s National Assembly. He studied law at National Taiwan University, and earned an LLM at New York University and an SJD from Harvard University.
Jerome A. Cohen, a professor at NYU School of Law from 1990-2020 and founding director emeritus of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute, is a leading American expert on Chinese law and government. A pioneer in the field, Professor Cohen began studying and teaching about China’s legal system in the early 1960s and from 1964 to 1979 introduced the teaching of Asian law into the curriculum of Harvard Law School, where he served as Jeremiah Smith Professor, Associate Dean and Director of East Asian Legal Studies. Professor Cohen continues his research and writing on Asian law, specifically focusing on legal institutions, criminal justice reform, dispute resolution, human rights, and the role of international law relating to China and Taiwan.
