Mission Statement
One of the missions of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute since its founding in 2006 has been to bring together the legal communities of the United States and East Asia in dialogue. We have done this through workshops, lunch speaker programs, visiting scholarships, and other forms of exchange. USALI Perspectives, a regularly published series of online essays, extends our dialogue to a new venue and brings in a new audience: readers who are curious about East Asian legal systems. Our essays will always keep non-specialist readers in mind. We will inform them about developments in domestic, comparative and international law in East Asia that have implications beyond the region. We will introduce new legal ideas, new approaches, and new scholarship in a way that is engaging to professionals and non-professionals alike. Over time, the body of USALI Perspectives essays will help us to see more clearly the role that law plays in broader relationships within East Asia and between East Asia and the United States.
