Japan Federation of Bar Associations
In 1997, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) and New York University School of Law created the JFBA Visiting Scholar Program. Under the program, Japanese public interest lawyers recommended by the JFBA spend a year in residence at the law school. When the U.S.-Asia Law Institute was founded at the law school, it became the program’s sponsor.
In 2008, the JFBA hosted a symposium in Tokyo to celebrate the JFBA Visiting Scholar Program’s 10th anniversary. Featured guests from the NYU School of Law for this symposium were Professor Frank Upham, who played a key role in setting up the program, and Professor Katrina Wyman, a leading scholar of environmental law.
