Japan Federation of Bar Associations

The Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) created the JFBA Visiting Scholar Program in 1997 with the New York University School of Law. Under the program, committed Japanese public interest lawyers recommended by the JFBA come to the NYU School of Law U.S.-Asia Law Institute as visiting scholars. The first such visiting scholars arrived in 1998. The JFBA later expanded its program to the University of California at Berkeley School of Law (in 2000) and the University of Illinois College of Law (in 2007).

On April 1, 2008 in Tokyo, Japan, the JFBA hosted a symposium to celebrate the JFBA Visiting Scholar Program’s 10th anniversary. Featured guests from the NYU School of Law for this symposium were Professor Frank Upham, who played a key role in setting up the program, and Associate Professor Katrina Wyman, a leading scholar of environmental law and keynote speaker at the symposium.
