Professor Jeffrey Wasserstrom

Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor’s Professor of Chinese History at the University of California Irvine, where he also holds courtesy appointments in Law and in Literary Journalism.  His book include, as author, China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford) and Eight Juxtapositions: China through Imperfect Analogies from Mark Twain to Manchukuo (published this month as a Penguin ebook), and, as editor, the forthcoming Oxford Illustrated History of Modern China.  He is a Fellow of the Asia Society, Editor of The Journal of Asian Studies, an editorial board member of Dissent Magazine, and co-editor of the "China Blog" of the Los Angeles Review of Books.  He has contributed to a wide range of general interest periodicals, including The New York Times, Foreign Affairs, Time, and The Wall Street Journal.  Educated at UC Santa Cruz, Harvard, and Berkeley, he has been traveling to China regularly since the mid-1980s.
