The European Society of International Law awarded its 2025 early career scholar prize to Xuan W. Tay, a visiting scholar at the U.S.-Asia Law Institute at NYU School of Law. Xuan’s award-winning paper is titled “Narrating National History, Constructing International Law.”
ESIL wrote that “the paper reveals the mutual dependency between national historiography and the structure of international law, showing how international law structurally sustains narratives of unity and continuity despite contestation. Also, it urges international lawyers to critically reflect on their own perspectives in framing the field.”
The prize is one of the society’s flagship annual awards.
Tay is completing his PhD in law at the University of Adelaide and is a visiting scholar at USALI during the 2025-2026 academic year.
