Professor Emeritus Jerome A. Cohen was quoted in Politico China Watcher’s article on “China 2021: Experts make their one big prediction.”
Professor Cohen’s prediction was:
— Xi Jinping’s father will officially roll over in his grave, goes one colorful prediction from New York University School of Law professor Jerome Cohen. “I believe that, after eight years of patient rumination, Xi Jinping’s late father, the distinguished first generation PRC leader Xi Zhongxun, whom Mao scorned and who returned to the leadership after Deng Xiaoping succeeded Mao, is finally going to turn over in his grave in solemn protest against his son’s ever greater suppression of free speech,” Cohen tells China Watcher. “In the early 1980s, on his return from sixteen years of exclusion from Beijing, the elder Xi, distilling a lifetime of wisdom gained from his revolutionary labors, publicly warned the Communist Party that it would never fully succeed in reaching its goals unless it finally allowed the expression of ‘differences in opinion’ (butong yijian). The son, while often praising his father and endorsing Confucian respect for one’s parents, has blatantly and increasingly rejected his father’s most important advice.”
