U.S.-Asia Law Institute Faculty Director Emeritus Jerome A. Cohen discusses the trial of the “Hong Kong 47,” forty-seven pro-democracy advocates arrested in Hong Kong under Beijing’s new national security law, in a recent Guardian article published on February 15, 2023. They have been accused of conspiring to subvert state power.
“Those going to trial may be detained for two or three more years before final judgment, so the government can’t lose in its effort to wipe out the leadership of civil society even if the court of final appeal should ultimately grant acquittal to an accused,” said Cohen.
