USALI Faculty Director José Enrique Alvarez Wins 2025 ABILA Book of the Year Award

The American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA) awarded its prestigious 2025 Book of the Year Award to “Women’s Property Rights Under CEDAW” by U.S.-Asia Law Institute Faculty Director José Enrique Alvarez and co-author Judith Bauder.

The book, published by Oxford University Press in 2024, provides the first comprehensive analysis of the property jurisprudence of the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. The committee is the leading international treaty body on women’s rights, and interprets obligations for states to protect women’s equal property rights with respect to inheritance, land rights, housing, financial credit, intellectual property, and other areas.

The authors demonstrate that the CEDAW Committee’s vision of gender equality in property rights goes beyond approaches that international investment regimes and global financial institutions take, offering a pathway to narrow the significant wealth gap between men and women worldwide.
