Jerome A. Cohen receives lifetime achievement award from AFLA

The American Foreign Law Association (AFLA) gave its 2021 Lifetime Achievement Award in International Law to Jerome A. Cohen, founding director emeritus of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute.

The association presented the award on June 16 at its annual meeting. Its announcement said the honor recognized Professor Cohen’s “decades of major contributions to a better understanding of Trans-Pacific, international, and human rights law.”

Professor Cohen pioneered research and teaching about China’s contemporary legal system in American law schools in the 1960s. He taught at Harvard Law School from 1964 to 1979 and at New York University Law School beginning in 1990. He also is Of Counsel at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, where he long represented foreign companies in contract negotiations and dispute resolution in China, Vietnam, and other countries in East Asia. Professor Cohen served for several years as C.V. Starr Senior Fellow and director of Asia Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, where he currently is an adjunct senior fellow.

Faculty Director José E. Alvarez elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences

USALI Faculty Director José E. Alvarez has been elected a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, one of the oldest and most prestigious learned societies in the United States. He is among 252 new members announced on April 22, and one of only five law professors who were chosen.

Jerome A. Cohen Honored with the Order of the Rising Sun from the Government of Japan

April 4, 2018 -- Jerome A. Cohen, NYU Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute, received the illustrious honor of The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. Consul General Ambassador Reiichiro Takahashi awarded the prestigious honor. The evening also featured congratulations by NYU Law School Dean Trevor Morrison and U.S.-Asia Law Institute Senior Fellow Ren Ito. Professor Cohen was awarded for his outstanding contributions in promoting interactions among Japanese and U.S. legal professionals as well as to enhancing the understanding of Japan among people in U.S.

NYU School of Law has announced a grant of $5 million from the Government of Japan for an endowment of the U.S.-Asia Law Institute (USALI) to ensure its long-term sustainability and to promote the use of international law to resolve conflicts and disputes in Asia.

Professor Jerome Cohen Receives Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Society of Comparative Law

On Friday, October 11, 2013 USALI Co-Director Professor Jerome Cohen received the American Society of Comparative Law's Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of his "extensive and rich work in Chinese law." The award was given at the Society's Annual Meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The American Society of Comparative Law, Inc. (ASCL) is the leading organization in the United States promoting the comparative study of law. Founded in 1951, it is a thriving organization of more than 100 institutional sponsor members, both in the United States and abroad, and a growing number of individual members. It is a member in good standing of the American Council of Learned Societies and International Association of Legal Science.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was established in 2003 to honor living senior comparatists whose writings have changed the shape or direction of American comparative or private international law. It is a “non-monetary recognition of lifetime extraordinary scholarly contributions to comparative law in the United States.” Previous awardees are Alan Watson, Distinguished Research Professor and Ernest P. Rogers Chair, University of Georgia School of Law, and Mirjan R. Damaška, Sterling Professor of Law Emeritus, Yale Law School.
